Industrial Narrow Gauge Incident

Accident to industrial narrow gauge loco

{photo: anon}

This dramatic photograph of an unfortunate accident to a narrow gauge locomotive was probably taken sometime in the fifties or sixties. It most likely occurred at the zinc smelter at Avonmouth near Bristol, UK, known at that time as the National Smelting Corporation. The locomotive has clearly fallen down the spoil heap, which looks as though it is burning internally. At the Smelter at that time there was a 2-foot narrow gauge railway for the internal movement of materials. The system was closed in the early seventies.

The locomotive is an 0-4-0 and is probably the same one as given on the next page.

I do not know who took this photograph or the one on the next page but they look as if they were probably taken taken to record what happened.
